Black Hills Photo Shootout FAQ’s

Who can attend the Photo Shootout? Anyone with an interest in photography at any level is welcome. The goal of each workshop is to provide you with both great learning and photography opportunities.  While some topics may be a little more advanced, we encourage you to ask questions throughout the event.  There is also a Photography 101 Seminar on Friday (included) for anyone who is new to photography or would like a refresher before going out in the field for their workshops. The photo workshops are a chance for people of all photography backgrounds to mingle, learn, and enjoy photographing in the Hills.

Meeting Expectations Our goal is to meet (and hopefully exceed!) your expectations during the Photo Shootout.  After every event we send out an evaluation.  We want honest feedback on what we are doing great on so we can continue and what we need to work on to make the event even better.  For that reason, if there is ANYTHING that is not meeting your expectations DURING your workshop, please talk with an instructor or Nicole RIGHT THEN…don’t wait for the evaluation, it is too late for us to do anything about it then.  If you tell us during the workshop, we are going to do our darndest to make things right.  We want honest answers on the evaluation, but if we take care of everything during the event, the evaluation can be fantastic and still be honest!

What is the Shootout registration fee and what is included and not included with that? The full weekend Shootout registration fee is $225. The fee includes Photography 101, the Friday Welcome and Keynote Presentation, one admission to each of the 4 four workshop sessions, the Saturday Lunch Presentation, Happy Hour, and the Sunday Lunch Presentation.

There is also a half weekend registration which includes the morning and afternoon photography workshops on EITHER Saturday OR Sunday as well as all of the activities on Friday.  The cost for the half weekend registration is $149.  The lunchtime session on the chosen day is also included.

The registration fee does not include lodging, food, transportation, park/location entrance fees, portfolio reviews, food or drinks at the Happy Hour, tips, pre or post workshops, shirts, hats, or any other optional add-on. If an event has an admission fee or additional fee, it will be noted in the “Things to know” section within the description, to the best of our knowledge at the time.

How can I get an awesome 2017 Shootout t-shirt? You can order your discounted Shootout t-shirt during registration.  As long as you order your shirt prior to August 31, you can pick it up at check-in on Friday night with no shipping charges.  There will be an extremely limited number of shirts available at the event, so if you want one, you will need to pre-order it when you register for the event.  After the date we place the order, if there are extra shirts available, they will be listed on the website, so if it allows you to place the order, you will receive the shirt.  Photo Shootout hats are also available in 3 colors! And new this year, we have embroidered Photo Shootout zippered hoodies in lots of colors! Hoodies must be ordered online by August 31, extras will not be available at the event.

Where will classes be held? The Black Hills State University in Spearfish will be our main hub for the Shootout, where all events will be held or leave from. Outdoor sessions vary in distance from Black Hills State University from being right around the corner up to an hour away, depending on location.  We promise they will be worth the drive though!

Where should I stay?  The 2017 Shootout will be based around Spearfish, South Dakota in the northern Black Hills, so you will want to look for lodging near there.  The Black Hills does cover a good sized area, so you should check driving times between locations. Here’s a starting point for hotel and lodging reservations in the Black Hills.

  • We have a block of discounted rooms reserved at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott – Spearfish which is down the street from BHSU (where all events will be held or leave from).
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott – Spearfish – 2720 1st Ave. E, Spearfish, SD 57783, (605) 642-3500, http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/rapsp-fairfield-inn-and-suites-spearfish/
  • The discounted rate for Photo Shootout participants is $85 for a room with 2 queen beds (there are a limited number of 1 king rooms, 1 queen rooms, and 1 king with sofa rooms available at the same rate).  When you call, tell them you would like a room listed under the Black Hills Photo Shootout for the special rate.
  • Breakfast is included at no charge and they will have a cold “grab & go” breakfast available at 4:30am for us on Saturday and Sunday mornings and will start the hot breakfast at 6:30am.
  • Free Wi-Fi, indoor pool, fitness center.
  • Smoke-free hotel.
  • To make your reservations at the discounted rate, call the hotel by September 18.
  • They will honor the discounted rate both before and after the event if you would like to stay in the area longer.

What airport should I fly in to? Rapid City (RAP) is the closest airport which is just over an hour away.

Is transportation provided? No, participants are expected to provide their own transportation. However, each workshop meets up with everyone in their group in the parking lot at BHSU and carpools from there. For all workshops, participants are encouraged or required to carpool due to limited parked, vehicle entrance fees, and to save gas. Participants should be aware of travel times between areas. We will provide directions for each of the workshop locations upon check-in.

What should I bring with me to the Shootout? Here is a link to a suggested pack list for the Shootout.  Please keep in mind that each workshop is different, so you will want to make sure you have the appropriate gear and clothing for the workshops you have registered for and that you keep an eye on the weather before heading out.

What is the Registration Deadline? We don’t have a deadline for the event as long as we still have spots in workshops available.  However, there may be earlier deadlines for things like special events and t-shirts.  While there is not a registration deadline, please understand that we do have to print things like nametags before the event, so if you register after they are printed, your nametag will be handwritten (with fair warning that I have terrible handwriting!)

Is tipping okay or expected? If you are attending a workshop where there are models (human or animal), animal handlers, or a guide, we do highly recommend tipping these people. Tipping of your instructor is never expected, but always appreciated.

Are meals provided? No, none of the sessions include meals. Some of the socials might have snacks, but you should plan on eating meals on your own. The dining hall at BHSU will be open for lunch on Friday from 10:45am-1:30pm and dinner from 5:00pm-6:30pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the dining hall will be open for brunch from 11:00am-1:00pm. Brunch/lunch is ~$9 and dinner is ~$10.

What will the weather be like?  It can be many things. But for the norm that time of year will be sunny and dry during the days – highs in the 50-60s. At night, cool to cold in the higher elevations. However, we can have a heat wave or even snow that time of year, so check the forecasts before you pack!  We always recommend dressing in layers that you can add or remove as the weather changes throughout the day.

What time zone will we be in?  We are on the western side of South Dakota which is in the Mountain time zone.

Model Releases All participants are responsible for supplying/obtaining any needed model releases or property releases for their photographs.  No forms will be available at the workshops.

Is there a discount for students? There is a 50% discounted student registration fee of $112.50 for the full weekend and $74.50 for the half weekend option.  Students must be full-time and documentation of student status is required. Please email Nicole with documentation of student status prior to registering to receive your discount code.

Our Instructors

We have a phenomenal group of professional photographers/instructors leading the events throughout the weekend! Check out more about each of them by clicking on their name below.

Sponsor a Student

Helping to mentor the next generation of photographers is very important to us. This is one of the reasons we offer the Mentor Program, which allows a number of high school photography students to each be paired up with a college photography student to attend the Photo Shootout for free through a Scholarship we offer. Students in this program are chosen by their teacher based on merit and photography interest.

For those full-time students who are not part of the Mentor Program, we offer a 50% discount. For some students, even that is out of their price range. If you would like to help sponsor a full-time high school or college student who is in a photography or arts program to attend the event through a scholarship at an even more discounted rate or for free (depending on their financial need), there are a number of students who would appreciate the opportunity. Any donation amount is appreciated and scholarships will be appropriated based on financial need and a form filled out by the student where they have the opportunity to explain how attending the Photo Shootout will benefit them and their future photography ambitions. All scholarship decisions will be made by Outdoor Photo Workshops and are final.

  • Full Student Scholarship – $112.50
  • Half of Student Scholarship – $56.25
  • Quarter of Student Scholarship – $28.13
  • Help a Student Out Scholarship – $10.00

If you sponsor a student, you will receive recognition as a Student Scholarship Sponsor in the Photo Shootout event program (you may also remain anonymous if you prefer). If you have a business which would like to sponsor a student, please see the Photo Shootout Sponsorship Packet for more details.

If you are a full-time high school or college student in need of a scholarship to attend the Photo Shootout, please fill out the Student Scholarship Application and return it to Nicole at Nicole@OutdoorPhotoWorkshops.com for consideration.

If you have any questions about the student scholarship sponsor program, please feel free to contact Nicole at (813) 956-8702 (Eastern Time) or Nicole@OutdoorPhotoWorkshops.com.
